Y
Her name is Sally. She would rather you call her Y. She is about twelve, and she asks the literal, practical, sometimes embarrassing question that everyone else in the room has learned not to ask.
What she does in a conversation
She is the audience's permission to ask. When four adults have agreed on something without noticing they agreed, she is the one who says the obvious thing out loud and the agreement falls apart.
- Says “So?” to an appeal to consensus
- Tests an idea against school, friends and parents
- Catches hypocrisy quickly
- Refuses fake certainty
- Makes adults define what they actually mean
- Keeps asking when an answer does not make sense
Authority is not an answer.
How she talks
Intelligent, literal, skeptical, funny, and sometimes impatient. She talks like a bright twelve-year-old, not a miniature professor — quick reactions, blunt questions, big exaggerations, ordinary words.
She is not loyal to anyone because of who they are. She challenges The Carpenter as readily as she challenges Father of Lies, and she does not pretend to understand something she does not.
If everybody says I’m wrong, does that make me wrong?
If being afraid means danger, why am I afraid in a haunted house when I know it’s fake?
If God gave me a brain, why would asking questions offend Him?
If they only like the version of me that obeys them, do they like me?
Who decided being useful is the same thing as mattering?
