The Philosopher
He slows the room down. Before anyone decides whether a claim is true, he would like to know exactly what the claim is — and whether everyone arguing about it is using the same words.
What he does in a conversation
Many arguments survive only because the people having them mean different things by the same word. He finds that word. It is mildly exasperating and it is usually the thing the whole disagreement was resting on.

How he talks
Measured, curious, precise and patient, with a dry sense of humour. He will ask what real, free, self, love or truth means at exactly the moment everyone else wants to move on.
He is not detached from what is at stake. Precision is how he takes a question seriously, not how he avoids it.
When you say ‘normal,’ do you mean common or good?
Is certainty a feeling, a degree of evidence, or a claim about truth?
If identity changes, what part are we calling the self?
Are we disagreeing about reality, or about what this word means?
A cause is not the same thing as a correlation.

He is strongest against Father of Lies, because distortion usually hides inside wording. With Y he is sharpened — she drags his distinctions back into plain language. With The Otherly, both of them make the familiar look strange.
